There's more to Marne-la-Vallée than Disney
Author: Janine Barclay
Many cities, towns and regions around the world become synonymous with one thing. Orlando is normally said in the same sentence as Disneyworld, and ‘Champagne' is usually discussed in relation to sparkling white wine, despite the many other highlights elsewhere in the French province.
Indeed, some places find it hard to shake off its ‘one trick pony' status. Another such place is Marne-la-Vallée, a small town near Paris.
It is what is known as a ‘new town', in the sense that it was carefully planned from the start in what was a previously undeveloped area - unlike other more conventional cities and towns that developed organically over a longer period of time.
So what is Marne-la-Vallée most famous for? Disneyland Paris, of course. Whilst little introduction is needed to Walt Disney's Euro resort, the town which it has called home for the best part of two decades has so much more to offer – which is good news for those wanting to explore the area around Euro Disney.
The chances are, the chief reason someone will have for visiting Marne-la-Vallée will be the Disney resort, but a little time out in the region's other attractions will do no harm at all – and will give you a better flavour of the surrounding area.
A mere five minutes from the Disneyland Paris resort, right in the heart of the main commercial district Val d'Europe, is the fantastic Sea Life Centre. More than 300 species spread across 50 magical displays take kids – and adults – on a wonderful underwater adventure. The highlight might just be the tunnel that offers a 360 degree view of marine life including sharks. Visitors shouldn't miss the touch-pools either, where talks and feeding sessions take place.
Les Arènes de Picasso and Les Espaces d'Abraxas are also well worth checking out. They are essentially giant post-modern housing projects and visitors can't help but be mesmerised by the buildings that are set out in octagonal layouts, with two giant circular units on opposing sides. A green park lies in the centre.
For shopaholics, Val d'Europe International Shopping Centre serves up a fantastic selection of discount designer outlets and a hypermarket. Everything from menswear and womenswear to home furnishings and electrical equipment are on offer here.
So it would seem that Disneyland Paris holidays have a lot more to offer than what initially meets the eye. Marne-la-Vallée is a fantastic place for all the family and whether you're looking to meet Mickey Mouse, traverse underwater tunnels or shop for discount designer wear, you won't be disappointed.
